Graz Stadtpark and more: a city where you’re never too far away from a green space

As you can see, the city of Graz certainly has plenty to offer. But not just for those who like to go out on the town - also for those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors.

Zinzendorfgasse takes you straight from the university to Stadtpark – one of the most popular green spaces for students to hang out at. Because Stadtpark is so close to the university, it’s hardly surprising that you see so many familiar faces there on sunny days. One part of Stadtpark, for example, is particularly popular among sports students (aka the athletes’ field. But you can always find a quiet little spot if you want to get your head down and study.

How “green” is life in Graz? – Sustainability & regionality

The “green” in Graz can also be understood in the figurative sense. Not only is it a place of learning, where knowledge grows, a strong message of sustainable environmental awareness is also being spread throughout the city. Car sharing, community gardens, second-hand shopping, packaging-free groceries, charity shops – these are just a few of the many sustainable projects and business ideas to be discovered here.

A further characteristic trademark of Graz are the local (farmers’) markets, where you can buy regional food products directly from the producers themselves. The biggest farmers’ markets are held on Lendplatz and Kaiser-Josef-Platz. Outside market hours, parts of the squares are taken over by skaters and there are several established “stalls” where you can buy something to eat and drink.

Our top tip: if you’re interested in growing your own vegetables, the best option for you would be to find out more about the community gardens in and around Graz.

Sustainability is also a hot topic on the university campus: the Attemsgarten is an allotment which is maintained and cultivated collaboratively and is accessible to all. There is also a Foodsharing “Fairteiler” where food is handed out to those in need. The University of Graz even has its own beehives right on campus!
